That does not mean Big Bear will always be the right place for every player or every family, and that is absolutely fine. Football journeys change, players develop at different rates and sometimes another environment may feel like the right next step. For us, what matters is that the people who are here want to be part of what we are building and share the values behind it.
A football team works best when players see themselves as part of something bigger. Of course we want ambitious players who want to improve, challenge themselves and see how far their football can take them, but individual development and being a good teammate should never be separate things.
We want players who work hard for one another, celebrate each other’s successes and understand that everyone in a squad has a part to play. The same applies to families. Supporting your own child is completely natural, but being part of a team also means supporting the group around them. Talent matters, but so do attitude, effort and the way players treat the people they share the pitch with.
That sense of togetherness is a big part of what we want Big Bear to be.
Every player wants to feel they are progressing, but football development is rarely straightforward. There will be good periods and difficult ones, matches that go your way and others that do not, and times when improvement feels quicker than others. Those tougher moments can be just as valuable. Learning to keep working, support teammates and respond positively when things are difficult is an important part of growing as a player.
That sits closely with our club motto, Non Deficere. Never Give Up. It is about resilience, continuing to learn and understanding that meaningful development takes time.
One principle we have always believed in at Big Bear is simple: Coach, don’t poach. We would rather invest our time and energy in developing the players already with us than spend it trying to tempt children away from other clubs.
That does not mean squads never change or that new players never arrive, because grassroots football naturally moves and evolves. But we believe development should sit at the heart of what we do. We want to help players improve, build confidence and enjoy their football rather than constantly looking elsewhere for the next player. For us, that is part of building a genuine team rather than simply collecting individuals.
There will also be times when a player or family feels another club or environment is the right next step for them, and if that happens, we will wish them well. There should not need to be bad feeling when somebody decides to move on.
Ultimately, we want children to enjoy playing football and continue developing, whether that journey remains with Big Bear or takes them somewhere else. There should not need to be bad feeling around that decision. What matters to us is creating an environment that players and families genuinely want to be part of. Some players may be with Big Bear for many years and others for a shorter period, but we hope everyone leaves having enjoyed their football, developed as a player and taken something positive from their time with the club.
That, for us, is what being part of Big Bear is about.
