Under the floodlights on a Friday evening, we’re launching a new group session just for keepers. The Big Bear Goalkeeper School is designed to give young goalkeepers a dedicated space to develop their skills, build confidence and learn the position properly, all in a supportive Big Bear environment.
In reality, individual football training plays an important role in the development of many young players, regardless of age, ability, or experience.
Whether a player is part of a team, preparing to join one, or simply looking to build confidence on the ball, 1-on-1 football coaching provides focused support that is difficult to replicate in group sessions. By tailoring training to the individual, players are given the time, attention, and structure needed to develop at their own pace.
In team football training sessions, coaches are often working with groups of players at different stages of development. While this is essential for learning teamwork, game understanding, and enjoyment, it naturally limits how much time can be spent on individual development.
1-on-1 football training removes that limitation. Each session is built entirely around the player in front of the coach. Their strengths, challenges, confidence levels, and position on the pitch shape the session. This approach allows players to receive significantly more touches on the ball, benefit from constant and specific feedback, and train at a pace that suits their learning style.
Because skills can be repeated and refined without interruption, players are able to fully understand techniques rather than rush through them. This focused environment often leads to faster improvement and a deeper understanding of the game.
Research in sports coaching and motor learning consistently shows that players develop technical football skills more quickly when training is individualised. Studies highlight that increased repetitions, immediate feedback, and targeted practice all accelerate learning and improve decision making under pressure. This type of deliberate practice is widely used in elite sport and closely aligns with the principles of 1-on-1 football coaching. By focusing sessions around the individual, players gain more meaningful touches on the ball, a clearer understanding of match situations, and greater confidence when those moments appear in games.
1-on-1 training benefits players at every stage of their football journey, whether they are currently part of a team or not. For players who already play in a team, individual sessions provide the opportunity to focus on the finer details that can make a real difference on matchday. Time can be spent improving ball control under pressure, first touch, decision making, and position-specific skills that are difficult to isolate during group training.
For players who are not currently in a team, 1-on-1 training offers a calm and supportive environment to build confidence and develop core skills at the right pace. Without the pressure of comparison, players can focus on becoming comfortable on the ball, understanding basic movements, and gaining the confidence needed to step into a team setting when they are ready.
This is what makes this type of training so effective. It allows players to focus on exactly what they need most at that moment in their development. This might include dribbling and ball mastery, shooting and finishing, defending techniques, or receiving and turning under pressure. Coaches can recreate realistic match scenarios, slow them down, and break them apart so players understand not just how to perform a skill, but when and why to use it in a game.
The real value of 1-on-1 football coaching is seen during matches. Players who train individually often show greater confidence on the ball, make quicker decisions, and feel more comfortable expressing themselves in game situations. They are more likely to attempt skills they have practised and less likely to panic under pressure.
Confidence is often the first change parents notice. When players feel prepared, they play with freedom and belief in their ability, which has a direct impact on performance and enjoyment.
At Big Bear, our 1-on-1 football training sessions are designed to support players at every stage of their football journey. Sessions focus on individual development, confidence building, and helping players apply their skills in real game situations.
We currently run 1-on-1 football training on Fridays from 7pm to 8.45pm at Cornwallis Academy, and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 1pm at Boughton Monchelsea Fields. All sessions can be booked through our website, with availability to suit different ages, abilities, and development goals.
