Good leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice or the most powerful person in the room. It’s built over time. It’s earned through how you show up every day, how you treat people, and whether your players truly trust you.
If you want to have a real impact, it has to be about them, not you.
Start with authenticity, players know when something isn’t genuine. You don’t need to be perfect or have all the answers, but you do need to be honest, consistent, and clear in what you stand for. That means being upfront about expectations, owning your mistakes, and living the standards you set every day. When your actions match your words, players feel it, and that’s what builds trust.
Trying to rely on power or control might get you a short-term reaction. A tough team talk, dropping a player, or raising your voice can influence behaviour in the moment, but it won’t build anything lasting. Players driven by fear stop taking risks, lose confidence, and often switch off when that pressure disappears.
Real progress doesn’t come from control, it comes from connection. When players trust you, they’re far more open to learning, improving, and pushing themselves. If you want them to give more, they need to want to play for you, not simply avoid letting you down.
Impact isn’t something you claim, it’s something players give you. And earning it comes down to three key things: presence, competence, and care.
Presence means being there and fully engaged. It’s about showing up to training with energy, being available for conversations, and demonstrating that you’re genuinely invested. Players notice when you’re switched on.
Competence is about knowing your football and being clear in your decisions. When players understand what you’re asking of them and, importantly, why, they’re far more likely to buy in. Clarity builds confidence.
Care is what underpins everything. Show players that you genuinely care about their development, not just results. When they feel that, they’ll accept tough decisions because they trust they’re coming from the right place.
You can deliver the best team talk in the world, but without trust, it means very little. Players need to believe that you’re honest, consistent, and there for them. If your actions don’t match your words, they’ll switch off quickly. But when trust is there, even the simplest messages carry real weight.
That trust is what shapes your culture. Culture isn’t built in one moment, it’s created through what you allow, what you encourage, and what you repeat every single week. Set clear standards and stick to them. Reward effort and team-first behaviour, address anything that falls below your expectations, and treat everyone fairly.
When players know where they stand, they feel secure, and when they feel secure, they perform better.
Small, consistent actions often have the biggest impact over time. Make space for regular one-to-one conversations and focus on listening more than you speak. Explain your decisions, players value understanding the “why” behind what you do.
Be honest when you get things wrong, and keep your focus on long-term development rather than short-term results. Above all, stay consistent. Your standards shouldn’t change week to week.
Being a manager isn’t about control, it’s about responsibility.
Your players will judge you on how you treat them, how you support them, and how you handle difficult moments. If you lead with honesty, show that you care, and remain consistent, you’ll earn something far more powerful than authority… you’ll earn trust.
And that’s where real impact begins.
