That doesn’t just apply to players and coaches, it applies to referees too.
The Kent FA introduced the yellow armband initiative as a way to support young, up-and-coming referees across Kent. The armband helps identify referees who are under the age of 18 and acts as a clear reminder that they are still children, learning their trade and developing within the game.
While we are keen to support all referees, it’s especially important to recognise that those under 18 fall under children’s safeguarding legislation. The yellow armband is designed to prompt everyone involved in the game, managers, coaches, parents, and spectators, to think twice before reacting or commenting. It reinforces the need to treat young referees with patience, encouragement, and respect.

“The idea of the yellow armband is to help identify those referees who are under the age of 18 and ensure they are supported. The concept is to ensure that managers, coaches, parents, and spectators think twice about making abusive or insulting comments to the young referees. Ultimately, the armbands are there to remind adults that the referee is still a child, learning to be the best official they can be. These abusive comments can be detrimental to the retention of match officials.”
Nick also highlights an important point that mirrors how we view player development. Referees will make mistakes, just like the young players they are officiating. They are human and often have to make quick decisions in split seconds. These moments are part of their learning process and development within the game.
If anyone has a concern regarding a young referee, it should always be raised through the appropriate channels with the County FA, rather than being directed at the referee themselves during or after a match. This helps ensure issues are handled correctly and protects young officials as they continue to learn and develop within the game.
At Big Bear Football, we fully support the yellow armband initiative. By working together to create safe and positive environments, we can help young referees grow in confidence, stay passionate about the game, and continue their journey in football for many years to come.
Respect the referee. Protect the game. 🐻⚽
